Before and after
When you copy an AI answer, the Markdown symbols come with it. Pasted into an email or a document, it looks like this:
Sure! Here's a quick project update.

Why do AI answers show ** and # symbols?
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and many note-taking apps write in Markdown, a lightweight formatting syntax. The chat window turns it into bold text and headings, but the text you copy still contains the raw symbols:
**bold**and*italic*markers## Headinghash marks at the start of a line---separators,>quotes and`code`backticks[link text](url)links and| pipe |tables
Apps that don’t read Markdown show these as plain characters. Unmarkdown removes the formatting and keeps your words. It does not rewrite, summarize or translate anything.
Where to paste the clean text
- Email (Gmail, Outlook): paste the clean text, then add bold or headings in the email editor where you need them.
- Word and Google Docs: paste the clean text and apply the document’s own heading styles instead of fixing stray symbols.
- Slack, Teams and messaging apps: many chat apps only understand part of Markdown or use their own syntax. Clean text looks the same everywhere.
- Notion and other Markdown editors: these read Markdown, so you can paste the original answer there and keep its formatting.
What if the answer contains a table?
Copy text gives you the text without the table. When a table is found, you can choose to copy the text without it or copy only the table. Copy table for Excel copies the rows as tab-separated cells, so each value lands in its own cell in Excel or Google Sheets and empty cells stay empty.
Spreadsheets can still change some values when you paste: a leading zero may be dropped (007), 3/4 may become a date, and text starting with = may be treated as a formula. Check those columns after pasting.
FAQ
What does a Markdown remover do?
It removes Markdown formatting symbols such as #, **, *, _, `, > and ---, and keeps the words, paragraphs and numbered lists.
Does it change the meaning of my text?
No. It only removes formatting. It also drops short filler that AI assistants add, such as “Sure!” at the very start or a closing line like “Let me know if you have questions.”
Does it work with ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini?
Yes. It works on the Markdown formatting, not on a specific model, so text from any AI tool or Markdown editor is cleaned the same way.
What happens to links, emoji and code?
A link written as [text](url) keeps its text and loses the URL, so copy URLs separately if you need them. Emoji are removed. Code blocks keep their content under a [Code] label, and the backticks around inline code are removed.
Is my text uploaded or stored?
No. The cleaning runs in your browser and your text is not sent to our server. The page uses Google Analytics to count usage, such as how many characters were copied, but not the text itself.
Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit on text length.
